In September of 2004, Hurricane Ivan ravaged the Cayman Islands for over 33 hours. The storm winds damaged over 95% of all buildings and 15 thousand cars and trucks were destroyed by rising seawater. Aquaport's founder, James C. Knapp, watched from the third floor of his office building as the storm surge water rose 5 feet and waves destroyed valuable property on the ground floor and rolled over the 47 vehicles parked in his lot below. The saltwater completely destroyed everything it came in contact with. The property and vehicles were complete write-offs with their respective insurance companies. As he witnessed this scene he thought there must be a way to protect a person’s possession including vehicles from rising flood waters. He then began the process of designing the Aquaport - basically a zipper locked bag for your possessions with two pressure relief (one-way) valves designed to release air from inside the bag as water rises around it.
After a global search for the right firm to manufacture the Aquaport, he located a U.S. company with the skills and experience needed for the production of large scale, industrial; military and commercial grade plastic products. The prototypes were built, thoroughly tested and made ready for production. Today the bags carry full warranties to provide purchasers with confidence and peace of mind that their possessions will remain safe and dry regardless of deep or widespread flooding.
The idea of a portable, clear plastic, protective cover with a military grade, water tight zipper, dual pressure relief valves for your possessions that can easily be set up by one person in less than 5 minutes is priceless.
